Abstract

The determination of boric acid content by alkalimetric titration is often limited by the weak acidic nature of boric acid, resulting in low ionization and an indistinct titration endpoint. The addition of glycerin has been reported to enhance boric acid ionization through the formation of a borate–glycerol complex, thereby improving the accuracy of the titration process. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of glycerin volume on the determination of boric acid content by alkalimetric titration and to identify the optimum glycerin volume for analysis. An experimental laboratory study was conducted using four glycerin volume variations: 0, 10, 25, and 30 mL. Boric acid solutions were titrated with standardized sodium hydroxide (NaOH) using phenolphthalein as the endpoint indicator. The observed parameters included the volume of NaOH consumed and the calculated boric acid content. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (One-Way ANOVA) followed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post hoc test at a 95% confidence level. The results demonstrated that the average NaOH volumes required for titration were 2.90, 13.22, 16.00, and 16.38 mL, corresponding to average boric acid contents of 18.36 ± 0.45%, 83.70 ± 0.53%, 101.31 ± 0.04%, and 103.58 ± 0.35% for glycerin volumes of 0, 10, 25, and 30 mL, respectively. One-Way ANOVA revealed that glycerin volume had a statistically significant effect on the determination of boric acid content (p < 0.001), while Tukey's HSD test confirmed significant differences among all treatment groups (p < 0.001). The addition of glycerin significantly enhanced the alkalimetric determination of boric acid by promoting the formation of a borate–glycerol complex, which increased boric acid ionization, produced a clearer and more stable titration endpoint, and improved analytical accuracy. Among the tested conditions, the addition of 25 mL glycerin provided the optimum performance, yielding a boric acid content closest to the theoretical value with a distinct and stable endpoint.
